The earliest drinking horns date from around the early 7th century. They are known from Classical Antiquity, and remained in use for ceremonial purposes throughout the Ages. Drinking horns are shown from Viking Age Scandinavia. Thor drank from a horn that unbeknownst to him contained all the seas, and in the process he scared Loki and his family by managing to drink a conspicuous part of its content. You also see them used as a ceremonial drinking vessel for those of high status all through the medieval period. Today they are still used in ceremonies such as weddings. With such a long history, why wouldn’t anyone want one for their very own? Our Bountiful Sustenance Hand Carved Drinking Horn has been hand carved and polished. The design is seen throughout every inch of this piece without ending. Included is a leather frog to hang on your person at parties or events. It makes a great gift and is perfect for re-enactments or a period wedding. The following 5 steps are being generally followed during the manufacturing process of drinking horns: a) Selecting an appropriate horn. b) Sanding the horn from the outside. c) Washing with hot water. d) Coating with glass coat lacquer from the inside to make it 100% safe for usage. e) Polishing. All horns are able to be cleaned with water temperatures up to boiling point and are polished to give a smooth finish. *Please wash with a gentle detergent and polish with vegetable oil to keep it from drying out. And from time to time you will want to use beeswax to coat the inside to keep from cracking and the inside drying out.
